RiverBend Guesthouse

description

A family ranch in Texas is in need of a cohesive overhaul which respects the existing architecture while plotting a path forward for future generations of the family. Throughout, energy efficiency, self-sufficiency, and warm, natural materials are in mind as utmost priorities.

Conceptually, the project can be defined as two distinct sleeping volumes connected by kitchen, dining, and living spaces. Where views are most prominent, to the south and southeast, dining, library, and patio spaces gesture outward into the landscape. The addition of a second floor grants an overview of the site for the children’s bunk area, and the associated double height spaces give a sense of spaciousness.

Further connection to the surrounding plains and open sky is achieved through thoughtfully curated indoor-outdoor spaces and brightening the existing dark, indoor spaces with plentiful windows. The home’s geometry itself takes cues from the Prairie Style to gently draw occupants through the home and out onto covered patios to cook, gather, and reflect.

Throughout, generous roof overhangs and an axial organization give a formal yet laid-back and low-slung aesthetic. These same traits allow for effective balancing of shading and daylighting, allowing the home to be passively cooled and reduce the reliance on mechanical lighting and space conditioning.
